Balloon Quest opens Thursday

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The annual Western Pennsylvania Balloon Quest will be Thursday through Sunday at Scotland Meadows Park, 2106 Camden Ave., Union Township, 1 mile east of Walmart. Hours are 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The event, which was started in 1989, will feature 25 hot-air balloons with a “Balloon Glow” at 9 p.m. Thursday. Balloon launches will be at 7 p.m. Friday, 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.

Sunfest event at Mill Creek Park

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek MetroParks Sunfest will be Sunday at Wick Recreation Area, off McCollum Road. The day will include a closest-to-the-pin contest from 8 a.m. to noon at the par-3 golf course. There will be prizes for each of the nine holes. Fee is $5.

A Zumba fest open dance session for all skill levels will be from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Sunfest hike on nearby trails will begin at 11 a.m.

Free games and activities for children will be from noon to 3 p.m., as will children’s crafts ($2 fee).

The Sand Sculpture contest will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Call 330-740-7107 to reserve a sand pile. Prizes will be awarded. Entry fee is $8.

The day will conclude with a performance by the House Band at Morley Pavilion at 6 p.m.

Arts fest for kids at Hoyt Center

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The Hoyt Center, 124 E. Leasure Ave., will have its annual Children’s Summer Arts Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The free event will feature the Chalk on the Walk competition for ages 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Prizes will be awarded.

Kids can make their own party hats, have their faces painted, make musical instruments, and create wearable art with tie dye (bring shirt, socks, caps or other garment).

The New Castle Mini Stars will perform during lunch, while magician David Lawrence strolls the grounds. Lawrence will perform on stage at 2:30 p.m., after the Chalk on the Walk awards presentation.

There also will be a petting zoo, pottery demonstrations, and a collaborative mural project. Children also may sit for a caricature drawing. Popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, pizza and popsicles will be available.
