1886: A legend is born as Steve Brodie claims to have made a dare- devil plunge from the Brooklyn Bridge into New York’s East River. However, there are doubts about whether the dive actually took place.

1888: Author Raymond Chandler is born in Chicago.

1914: Austria-Hungary issues a list of demands to Serbia after the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serb assassin; the dispute led to World War I.

1945: French Marshal Henri Petain who had headed the Vichy government during World War II, goes on trial, charged with treason. He is convicted and condemned to death, but the sentence is commuted.

1967: A week of deadly race-relaed rioting that claims 43 lives erupts in Detroit.

1988: Rafael Garcia Jr., 24, testifies in the murder trial of Marie Poling, saying he got the idea of using an ax to cut off the head of her husband, Richard Poling, from the movie, “Little House of Horrors”.
