School district looks for Chaney principal

Next year, Chaney Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Visual and Performing Arts School will have its third principal since its 2011 inception.

The city school board at a regular meeting Tuesday approved the resignation of S. Diane Rollins, effective this month. Rollins cited personal reasons in her decision to leave. She’d been Chaney principal since February 2012. Rollins replaced Richard Gozur, who was named principal at the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, the first year the school functioned as a STEM/VPA school for sixth through 12th graders. Gozur resigned that same school year, citing personal reasons.

Superintendent Connie Hathorn expects to make a recommendation for a new principal to the school board at its next meeting Aug. 13. The job has been posted.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved tax abatements for two companies. Both abatements are for 10 years at 75 percent.

Commercial Metal Forming, Logan Avenue, is spending $5 million on an expansion — $2 million on a new 10,000-square-foot office building and $3 million for new equipment and training.

The company employs 124 and makes tank heads and custom stamping for the transportation, gas and oil industries.

“It’s going to be a great improvement,” said Richard Atkinson, school board president.

The other abatement is for Giovanni’s Catering & Banquet Hall, South Meridian Road.

The school board also approved spending about $161,000 to renovate the cosmetology department at Choffin Career and Technical Center.

Choffin Director Joseph Meranto said the department hasn’t been renovated since it was built in 1973. He said the project, which will be paid out of career tech and trust funds, will not be paid out of the general fund. The project will help better prepare students in the program and generate more revenue by attracting an adult clientele to use the services.
