The Arthritis Foundation’s newly redesigned program “Breaking the Pain Chain” is offered on four consecutive Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Aug. 1 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, 1350 E. Market St. Classes are designed for people who want to be active participants in their arthritis management.

Pre-registration is required and registrants are accepted on a first-come first-served basis upon receipt of the registration form and payment. The cost is $40, which includes the four educational sessions, a health organizer and Arthritis Foundation materials. Partial need-based scholarships are available. A spouse or a caregiver may attend free of charge.

Summer symposium

Someplace Safe and Trumbull Memorial Hospital Healthy Woman are offering the Balanced Woman Mid-Summer Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Kent State University at Trumbull, 4314 Mahoning Ave. N.W.

The program, open to the public, focuses on providing women with information and tools to help achieve and maintain a healthy, balanced life. Yoga and mindful dance classes, health screenings and a variety of displays are featured, along with presentations by area physicians and health professionals.

Registration is required. The $25 fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

Volunteers needed

YOUNGSTOWN

The Amblyopia Vision Screening Program of Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries is looking for new volunteers to conduct vision screenings on preschool children in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Training, materials and partners are provided for the volunteer vision screenings. Sessions are scheduled according to the screener’s availability mornings or afternoons, Monday through Friday. Scheduling and follow-up are handled by the program coordinator.

Lazy eye, the common name for amblyopia, is reduced vision in an eye resulting when the pathways of vision in the brain do not grow strong enough. Early detection and treatment can correct an eye, which may be too damaged for correction at a later time.

Mandatory volunteer training, provided by the Ohio Department of Health, is at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at Goodwill Industries, Belmont Avenue, Liberty. For information call from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday or Thursday at 330-759-7921.

Safe driving course

Shepherd of the Valley is inviting drivers 60 and older to sign-up for the AAA Safe Driving for Mature Operators Course offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5 and 7 at Shepherd of the Valley-Poland, 301 W. Western Reserve Road.

The cost is $10 for AAA members and $15 for nonmembers. Lunch is available daily for $6. Registration for lunch and the class is required. Call 330-726-7110, ext. 0.

The state-certified course, which can qualify attendees for auto insurance discounts, includes interactive classroom-based instruction on up-to-date information on mature driver’s education. Focus areas include vision, adjusting speed, road rage, drowsy driving, prescription medications, and driving emergencies.
