Pigskin Preview set Aug. 25 in Warren

The Warren Sports Hall of Fame presents the 2013 Pigskin Preview on Aug. 25 at DiLucia’s Banquet Center, 2610 Elm Road. This annual event includes dinner, guest speaker Gerry Faust, the former Notre Dame and Akron head coach, plus projections for the 2013 high school football season from area coaches.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner is at 6 and the speaker will begin at 6:30. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door and/or from a WSHOF executive board member.

YSU women’s soccer program has free clinic

The Youngstown State women’s soccer program will hold a free instructional clinic Aug. 4-5 from 4-6 p.m. Included in the free clinic is skill and tactical instruction from our current staff members and players.

The first hour will consist of soccer instruction (i.e. finishing, skills, offensive and defensive 1v1 tactics). The second hour will consist of players being put on teams and playing in games.

The clinic is open to any and all entrants with no age restrictions and there will be a $5 parking fee. For more information, call assistant coach Jenn Montgomery at (407) 929-2557.

Hoke invites Ohio boy with ‘Michigan’ cancer

ANN ARBOR, Mich.

Brady Hoke is inviting the young Ohio State fan who named his cancer “Michigan” to see the Buckeyes play the Wolverines. Michigan’s coach has offered Grant Reed tickets to this year’s matchup between the two rivals in Ann Arbor. A Michigan spokesman confirmed that Hoke called Reed and his family Monday.

Columbus TV station WCMH reports the 12-year-old Reed finished his final chemotherapy treatment a couple weeks ago. Reed’s father, Troy, tells the station his son gladly accepted Hoke’s offer.

When Grant was diagnosed with cancer less than two years ago, he chose to name his disease Michigan. He wanted to beat it — and he has.

Rangers acquire RHP Garza from Chicago

ARLINGTON, Texas

The Texas Rangers acquired starting pitcher Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs in a trade completed Monday, just more than a week before the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline and several days after it initially appeared that the two teams had a deal in place.

The 29-year-old right-hander provides a boost to a starting rotation plagued by injuries and a team that slipped three games behind Oakland in the AL West after being swept in a three-game weekend series at home against Baltimore.

Texas sent the Cubs rookie right-hander Justin Grimm, top prospect third baseman Mike Olt and Class-A pitcher C.J. Edwards. There will also be at least one player to be named later, possibly two, depending on who is chosen by Chicago.

Garza (6-1, 3.17 ERA), who can become a free agent after this season, has made 11 starts since missing the first seven weeks this season with a strained left lat muscle. He is 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA his last six starts.

Charges dismissed against Tar Heel star

Authorities have dismissed charges against North Carolina basketball leading scorer P.J. Hairston from a traffic stop last month.

Hairston was arrested June 5 and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license at a checkpoint in Durham, N.C. But prosecutors dismissed those charges Friday afternoon after Hairston produced proof he had a driver’s license and had completed a drug assessment program, said Elizabeth Tapley with the Durham County clerk of court’s office.

The drug assessment determines whether a person has a drug problem, Durham County district attorney Leon Stanback said Monday afternoon. In a phone interview, Stanback said it’s a common way for his office to handle first-time offenders on a misdemeanor marijuana charge.
