Firefighters responded to fires in two separate parts of town about two hours apart Monday morning.

Crews were called to 6 North Jackson St., a former public library, on the East Side about 1:50 a.m. and found smoke coming out of the back of the building.

Firefighters managed to get the fire out quickly and contain it to the room where it started, reports said.

A passer-by called firefighters when he saw smoke coming out of the building, reports said.

Damage is listed at $500. A cause is under investigation.

About 3 a.m., firefighters were called to 114 W. Florida Ave. on the South Side for a vacant home that caught on fire. Reports said the fire started in the basement and that there was flaming natural gas shooting out until the gas could be shut off by Dominion East Ohio crews.

The home is listed as a total loss, and damage is estimated at $13,000, reports said.

Also on the South Side about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, a 194 W. St. Louis Ave. home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Damage there is listed at $3,000. No cause was reported.

At 3:27 a.m., crews were also called to R&R Auto Body, 1405 Rigby St., for a report of a car fire. They found smoke coming from the passenger’s side, and the trunk was open. Damage was listed at $7,500. The cause of that fire is under investigation.

No one was injured in the fires.
