Mahoning County commissioners approved a resolution Monday to establish a Hazardous Materials Response Agency.

“We just feel the Hazmat team is going in a great direction,” Austintown Fire Chief Andy Frost said. “At the [Mahoning Valley] Chiefs Association, we are very happy with the way we presented this to you. And I think it will just make things better for us.”

Frost said because of Marcellus Shale it is necessary to adjust the language in some of the resolutions and bring the Hazmat team up to date. Frost said the goal is to reach out to work with other teams on the restructuring.

“It is going to make that a more functional department,” said Carol Rimedio-Righetti, commissioners chairwoman.

Also, the commissioners approved an agreement with the city of Youngstown for renewal services for recycling programs, community assistance, education and litter control for $210,000.
