Iconic giant milk bottle in Whately, Mass., gets makeover

WHATELY, Mass.

The iconic giant milk bottle in downtown Whately has been given a face-lift.

The Whately Historical Society recently restored the large, concrete milk jug that’s nearly 20 feet tall with $650 in donations.

Society member Adelia Bardwell says the bottle was scraped down, cleaned and repainted with a new emblem and cream line.

The bottle reads “Quonquont Farm Certified Milk.” It originally was built for a local dairy farm in the 1920s.

She tells The Recorder of Greenfield that it’s important the bottle be in tip-top shape because it’s the “symbol of Whately.”

The society began discussing refurbishing the landmark one year ago as black mildew stained the white surface.

Ice cream still is served out of the bottle’s Dutch door at the town’s fall festival.

Man arrested for stealing Bay Area transit bus

OAKDALE, Calif.

Authorities say a shirtless man who purportedly stole a transit bus from a San Francisco terminal drove it 100 miles before being arrested.

California Highway Patrol officers put down road spikes to flatten the tires and get the bus to stop Friday.

The driver faces charges including reckless driving, failure to yield and grand theft.

Alameda County Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson tells KPIX-TV that the bus was outfitted with a GPS system, which allowed authorities to track it.

No one was on the bus or was injured. Johnson says the bus was parked, closed and locked at the terminal when it was stolen.

Fisherman gets 230-lb. tuna despite capsized boat

LIHUE, Hawaii

A 54-year-old fisherman is safe after his 14-foot boat capsized as he was landing a 230-pound tuna in the ocean off Hawaii.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued Anthony Wichman on Friday after receiving a distress call from his wife.

Wichman was fishing about 10 miles southwest of Port Allen on the island of Kauai on Friday morning when he hooked the Ahi tuna. Coast Guard Lt. Jessica Mickelson tells Hawaii News Now that Wichman was able to use his cellphone to call his wife for help.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to rescue Wichman. Friends arrived on another boat and were able to right Wichman’s boat. They towed it — and the fish — back to port.
