New charges for man who tried to escape after heroin OD

YOUNGSTOWN — A man who overdosed on heroin earlier in the day later tried to escape from an officer who was sent to pick him up at St. Elizabeth Health Center about 2:44 a.m. today.

Reports said Ernest M. Rayford, 30, of Campbell, was ready to be released and an officer came to take him to the Mahoning County jail for charges related to the overdose. Reports said Rayford asked to use the bathroom and when he was granted permission,he ran past the bathroom and through the emergency room, trying several doors to get out but they were locked.

He tried to barricade himself in a closet but was arrested after an officer forced open the door.

An additional charge of escape was added, police said.
