Sister Jerome’s Poor: Mission College has been awarded a St. Ann Legacy grant of $5,000 from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland.

Sister Jerome Corcoran, OSU, directs the ministry, which is sponsored by the Ursuline Center.

Mission College is a new program that helps young adult students from low-income families overcome obstacles to receive the certifications and degrees that will allow them to escape the cycle of poverty.

Sister Jerome’s ministry will use the grant to help 12 young adults from poor families with education-related costs that may force them to drop out of school. As needed, they will receive gas cards or bus passes to get to class and gift cards or direct donations for clothing, shoes, books and class materials, including technology-oriented devices that are necessary for class work.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland works to improve the lives of the poor, especially women and children.

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown have ministered to the poor and disadvantaged with education, health care and parish and outreach programs since 1874.

The sisters founded Ursuline High School and Youngstown Community School in Youngstown. They founded and administer The Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten. They also founded Beatitude House and Potter’s Wheel, which provide disadvantaged women with housing, educational and other assistance. At Dorothy Day House, free meals are served each day to those who are hungry.

Thousands of people benefit from these and several other ministries of the Ursuline Sisters.
