Scrappers’ streak of two matches season high

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their second series of the season on Friday by defeating the Brooklyn Cyclones, 2-1.

The win came one night after the Scrappers defeated the Cyclones, 6-2.

With the temperature pushing 100 degrees for the second straight night, Venezuelan native Luis Lugo was dominant. The Scrappers’ left-handed starter allowed four hits in five innings.

Cole Sulser worked two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

In the seventh inning, the Scrappers (9-22) broke a scoreless tie with two runs.With tow outs, Martin Cervenka hit the ball off the left-field wall to score Nellie Rodriguez and Josh McAdams.

Reliever Manuel Carmona ran into trouble in the eighth inning when he walked consecutive hitters. L.J. Mazilli grounded out but drove in the Cyclones’ run.

McAdams in center field ended the Cyclones’ threat when he sprinted and dove to catch a ball hit by Jared King, stranding the tying run at third base.

Ursuline High graduate Eddie Rohan caught for the Cyclones and was 1-for-3 at the plate.

For the Scrappers, Rodriguez had two of the team’s six hits.

King led the Cyclones’ (13-18) offense with two of their six hits.

With consecutive wins, the Scrappers won back-to-back games for the first time since June 19-20.

The Scrappers remain in New York to begin a three-game series against the Staten Island Yankees.
