Weathersfield Board of Education has approved placing a 5.15-mill, 10-year emergency levy on the Nov. 5 ballot to generate $538,168 a year.

The measure had been a five-year levy, first passed in November 2004 at 5.6 mills, to generate the same amount. It was renewed in March 2008 at 5.2 mills.

The district can now ask for a 10-year emergency measure due to changes in the law, which previously limited duration to five years. Payments from the levy would start in 2014, and the first tax payment to the district would be in March 2015.

Also at its meeting this week, the board approved a new three-year contract with district Treasurer Laurena Rouan. She had been making $59,534 under her previous five-year contract.

With the new contract, starting in the 2013 to 2014 school year, she will receive a $500 increase to $60,034; a 1.5 percent increase to $60,427 for 2014-2015 and a 1 percent increase to $61,031 for 2015 to 2016.

Schools Superintendent Damon Dohar reported that work at the high school and Seaborn Elementary school is progressing on time and on budget.

Plans are to add on to Seaborn, revamp and add on a gym at the high school, and tear down most of the middle school under a $25.2 million Ohio School Facilities Commission project, which includes $17.5 million in state grants and $7.5 million from a 6.6-mill, 30-year bond issue approved in March 2012, along with a 1-mill levy to generate $85,521 for maintenance and needed equipment.

The district will also add local funds of $529,139 to pay for the new junior high school gym, which is expected to cost $1.5 million.

Asbestos has been removed from both schools, and the Seaborn tear-down is almost done. Plans are to tear down 70 percent of the building, then build a new addition for the K-6 building.
