Shepherd of the Valley-Poland dedicated a flag pole to one of their former residents July 2.

Martha Jane Crum, a resident at Shepherd of the Valley for more than 14 years, died in 2010. She donated money from her estate to the Shepherd of the Valley Foundation, which purchased the new flag pole.

“We lost our old flag pole in a storm,” explained Patricia Ahlswede, residential care coordinator.

Pastor Sharon Caron, pastor at the Boardman and Poland branches Shepherd of the Valley, began the dedication with a prayer.

“We meet together this day to ask God’s blessing on this flag pole and the flag that will fly upon it,” said Caron.

Ahlswede then read a poem to remind the audience about what the flag and our freedoms are all about.

“We are so blessed to have this way to display our flag,” said Ahlswede.

The dedication ended with words about Crum and a moment of silence.

Ahlswede said Crum was very generous and kind by nature.

“Today we’d like to take a moment to remember our friend Jane, take a moment to remember our country, our freedom, and take a moment to remember each other and being kind to each other,” said Ahlswede. This is really the heart of what Jane would have wished for.”
