Children wiggled their fingers, noses and other body parts then threw the wiggles in a jar. After that, it was time for Fun for 4s and 5s at the Austintown library July 10.

The event offered developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities to help children ages 4 and 5 become successful readers.

“Reading simple books is a great way to learn letters,” librarian Kathe Orr said.

The theme of this week’s event was cats. Orr placed pictures and the matching word on a magnetic board and encouraged children to read and shout out the words: cat, fat, bat, rat, and others that rhymed.

Joanne Seman brought her three-year-old granddaughter, Mia Haggerty, to the program.

“We come all the time,” Seman said. “We have gone through all the programs, from the time she was two years old. And she loves it. She’s come out of her shell, coming here.”

While she waited for the program to begin, Haggerty worked on a ladybug puzzle.

“We always come early so she can play,” Seman said.

Following the stories and songs, children made a cat puppet using a brown paper bag. Brady Will enjoyed the project.

He attends regularly with his grandmother, Georgetta Will.

“He needs to be with the kids and socialize,” she said.

The craft-making part of Fun for 4s and 5s is always Brady’s favorite part. They also play on the computer and sign out books while at the library.

“He’s grown to really look forward to Wednesdays when we come to the library,” Georgetta said.
