1536: The English Parliament passes an act declaring the authority of the pope void in England.

1932: The United States and Canada sign a treaty to develop the St. Lawrence Seaway.

1940: The Democratic National Convention at Chicago Stadium nominates President Franklin D. Roosevelt for an unprecedented third term in office.

1976: At the Montreal Olympics, Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci receives the first-ever perfect score of 10 with her routine on uneven parallel bars. (Comaneci would go on to receive six more 10s at Montreal.)

1984: Gunman James Huberty opens fire at a McDonald’s fast food restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif., killing 21 people before being shot dead by police.

1988: Nancy V. Lawton and her son, Gary D. Lawton, both of Austintown, are the only mother-son delegates in the 226-member Ohio delegation at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta.

Paul DeNiro is electrocuted when a crane boom touches a high tension Ohio Edison line while laying a water line in North Jackson. His brother, Carl, suffered third-degree burns of his foot and hand.

1938: Howard L. Scheetz, 19, of 214 Breaden St., is killed almost instantly when struck by a B&O passenger train at Tod Avenue and West Avenue while arranging a delivery to the Scheetz Lumber Co.

Lottie Yates, 25, dies after being cut on both legs by one of two participants in a street fight in front of her home at 326 E. Wood St. Her two small sons witnessed the attack.

Observance of Russian Day at Idora Park draws about 8,000 people.
