GIRARD

A 33-year-old Davis Street man returned home from watching the Girard fireworks Tuesday night to find the back door of his home kicked in and several items missing from his bedroom. Among the missing items were five handguns, approximately $320 in cash, and the man’s Staffordshire bull terrier.

“Out of everything, honestly, I’m most upset about my dog,” he said. “Everyone loves her. She’s well-behaved, she walks without her leash, and she’s affectionate.”

The victim said that his bedroom was turned over and his change jar was missing.

“They didn’t make much of a mess, just the bedroom area,” he said. “My only assumption is they went up there and said ‘I can’t carry any more.’”

Jeffrey Palmer, Girard’s chief of police, said that it is “absolutely a concern” for the department that so many weapons were taken.

“He hasn’t contacted us with any serial numbers yet,” Palmer said, adding that police do not have any leads in the preliminary stages of this investigation.

The dog answers to the name “Precious” but does not have a collar or name tag.

The victim moved to the area in October. He said he plans to speak to his neighbors and show them photographs of his dog to see if she can be found.

Any information on Precious or other stolen items can be forwarded to Girard Police Department at 330-545-0212.
