3 Penguins honored by basketball coaches

YOUNGSTOWN

Three Youngstown State men’s basketball players were recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in the group’s NABC Honors Court, recognizing more than 700 collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the 2012-13 season.

Seniors Kendrick Perry (Ocoee, Fla.) and Mike Podolsky (Canfield) and former Penguin Blake Allen (Tampa, Fla.) represented YSU on the list.

Perry, a two-time All-Horizon League First-Team selection and NABC All-District choice, owns a 3.36 grade-point average in criminal justice while Podolsky carries a 4.0 GPA in business finance. Allen, an accounting major, posted a 3.57 grade-point average.

Tripleheader to break Speedway idle streak

HARTFORD

Sharon Speedway hopes to get back on track Saturday with a special program after having no racing since June 22 due to three rainouts and an off night.

The rescheduled Sweeney Chevrolet Night will feature the NDRL’s ULMS Super Late Models, Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Series with the GM 604 engine giveaway, and the UEMS Modifieds. Also on the card will be the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars and the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks.

Pits open at 4 p.m. with grandstands at 5. Group qualifying for all three of the headlining divisions will get underway at approximately 6:30 p.m. with racing at 7. Grandstand admission for those 14 and over is $15, while children under 14 are always free.

Area golfers do well in youth tournament

Four area golfers finished in the top 10 in their age divisions Wednesday in a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf tournament at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley.

Isaac Davidson of East Liverpool won the boys 13-15 division with a 2-over par score of 74. Kaylee Neumeister of Cortland was third in the girls 13-15 division with a score of 83, 10 strokes behind the winner’s total.

In the 16-19 age group, Angelica Maggio of Warren was fifth among the girls with an 86 and Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls was 10th with a 78, eight strokes behind the winning score. Also, Bruce Williams Wiggins of Columbiana finished 16th in the boys 13-15 division with a score of 83.

Touchdown Club to host fund-raiser dinner

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Touchdown Club is sponsoring a football kickoff dinner as a fund-raiser Aug. 9 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center.

The cost is $75 per ticket, $125 per couple or $500 for a table of eight guests. The evening will include dinner, dessert, open bar and a reverse raffle with cash and other prizes. The bar opens at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is at 7.

Six local football players to Westminster

Local scholar-athletes who have committed to continuing their football careers at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., include: David Jamieson, Brookfield, DL; Jarred Crowder, Newton Falls, DB; Chris Wess, Struthers, DB; Dan Yargo, Youngstown Christian, K; Alphonso Brantley, Campbell, WR/DB; Zach Renier, Leetonia, WR.

Mar-Hill bowling event competes on weekends

BOARDMAN

Boardman Lanes is the site of the 38th annual Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles bowling tournament, which runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through July 28, with squads at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. each night.

The tournament is at the halfway point and Ashley Lombardozzi’s 290 game and 747 series propelled her and Sam Carissimi into first place with a 1,493 total.

Second place is held by Tina White and Jack White with 1,478. In third are Stephanie Clossin and Jim Woolensack with 1,464.

The entry fee is $32 per entry with $1 from each entry going into the John and Judy Bossone Memorial Scholarship Fund which benefits college students.
