PSP: Local officer fatally shot woman with knife

OIL CITY, Pa. (AP) — State police have been called into investigate after a northwestern Pennsylvania police officer reportedly shot a knife-wielding woman after answering a call about a mental health issue.

Police in Oil City have not identified the officer involved or the woman who was shot. State police from the Lawrence Park barracks near Erie are investigating. It’s common for an outside police agency to investigate fatal shootings involving local police.

State police Capt. Steve Ignatz says “preliminary indications are that the officers were responding to a call of a person with reported mental issues.” Police say that woman attacked one of the officers with a knife before she was shot about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
