More witnesses to testify in Pa. voter ID trial

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — More witnesses are expected to testify for the plaintiffs in a trial on the constitutionality of Pennsylvania voter-identification law.

Lawyers say several people are expected to testify in Commonwealth Court today, the third day of the trial, including a state official involved in developing a special ID for registered voters who lack a driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID.

Tuesday’s session before Judge Bernard McGinley was consumed mostly by testimony from a statistics expert who estimates that hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised if the law is allowed to take effect.

Republicans who control the Legislature muscled through the legislation and GOP Gov. Tom Corbett signed it into law in March 2012. The court has blocked enforcement since before last year’s presidential election.
