MLB drug bans not likely this year

NEW YORK

The baseball players’ association says any suspensions resulting from the sport’s latest drug investigation likely won’t be served until next year if the discipline is challenged before an arbitrator.

Union head Michael Weiner says he expects Major League Baseball will notify the union of its plans for penalties in the next month, and the union will maintain that any discipline should not be announced until after arbitrator Fredric Horowitz upholds a ban.

Former MVPs Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun are among the players under investigation for ties to Biogenesis, a closed anti-aging clinic linked with the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs.

Bucks waive Gooden

MILWAUKEE

The Milwaukee Bucks have waived forward Drew Gooden and designated him as their amnesty player.

Gooden had two years and about $13.4 million remaining on his contact. He still receives the money, but it doesn’t count against the Bucks for salary cap purposes.

Gooden signed with the Bucks in 2010, and the 11-year veteran averaged 11.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 107 games.

Heat release Miller

MIAMI

The Miami Heat are designating Mike Miller as their amnesty player, a move that may save more than $30 million in luxury tax payments over the next two years.

Miller spent three seasons in Miami, helping the Heat win two titles and playing big roles in each playoff run. He started the last four games of this year’s NBA Finals and made seven 3-pointers in Miami’s title-clinching Game 5 win over Oklahoma City in 2012.

Miller was due $12.8 million over the next two seasons.

NASCAR revamping appeals process

COLUMBIA, S.C.

NASCAR plans to automate its rule book and revamp its appeals process in a wide-ranging effort to bring more clarity to race teams and fans.

Starting in 2015, it will convert its rule book from a word document to computer automated-design drawings so race shops can see exactly what is allowed and what isn’t.

It also plans to spell out exact penalties that violating each rule may bring.

When a penalty is appealed, NASCAR wants more experts on the panel instead of some who might not have as strong a background regarding the infraction.

Police say former 100-meter world-record holder Asafa Powell, Jamaican teammate Sherone Simpson and their trainer are under investigation for violating Italy’s doping laws.

The move comes a day after Italian police confiscated unidentified substances in a raid on the hotel where the three were staying in the northeastern town of Lignano Sabbiadoro, following the athletes’ positive tests for banned stimulants.

The trainer is Christopher Xuereb of Canada.

Police are still analyzing the substances confiscated.
