Boy, 4, hit by car

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are trying to figure out how a 4-year-old boy was hit by a car in the 1200 block of East High Avenue about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

A woman at the scene said it appeared someone was backing out of a drive and hit the boy, who was then taken by his family to ValleyCare Northside Medical Center. They notified police, who went to investigate.

Police detained a man they said may have been the driver on a traffic warrant from Campbell police and were holding the car until accident investigators could look at it.

The boy’s name was not available late Tuesday.

He was to be transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital, police said.

Cops find loaded revolver in car

youngstown

Police arrested a 74-year-old man about 2:25 p.m. Monday after finding a loaded .22-caliber revolver in his car.

Officers pulled over a car at South and Auburndale avenues for failing to signal for a turn, and they discovered the passenger, 22-year-old Marian Jones, had a warrant.

The driver of the car, James Williams, was asked for permission to search it, and he gave his permission.

The gun was found in the glove box.

Reports said Williams told officers it was the first time in the 40 years he had the gun that he took it out of the house.

Williams was taken to the Mahoning County jail for the charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle while Jones was taken to the jail on the warrant.

Cops seek information

WEATHERSFIELD

The Weathersfield Police Department has asked the public to provide any information on a man who may be impersonating a police officer.

A motorist reported she was driving on Salt Springs Road about 8:30 a.m. Monday when a white male in a light-blue car with a blue-and-white flashing light on the dashboard caused her to pull over.

The male was about 6 feet tall with brown hair and was wearing a dark-blue uniform similar to that of a police officer.

He told the woman her lights were not working properly and she would receive a ticket in the mail.

He then followed her to Girard but eventually turned in another direction.

Anyone with information, should call the Weathersfield Police Department at 330-652-6486.

Decision appealed

WARREN

Warren Auditor David Griffing has appealed a decision that ordered him to certify the payroll of a Warren Municipal Court employee who wishes to retire and be rehired full time.

Griffing filed a notice Monday with the Warren-based Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals indicating that he has appealed that court’s decision to the Ohio Supreme Court.

If Griffing would follow the appeals court’s ruling, it apparently would allow Louise O’Grady, a clerk-bailiff for Judge Thomas Gysegem, to retire and be rehired full time, a practice outlawed by a 1984 Warren ordinance.

O’Grady filed a mandamus action with the appeals court seeking to force Griffing to file the paperwork necessary to allow the retire/rehire.

Items stolen from home

BOARDMAN

Police here are looking for whoever who broke into a township couple’s South Avenue home and stole two guns, a TV, watch and bank card.

The couple told police the suspects stole a 42-inch TV, 40-caliber handgun, 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a Betsy Johnson watch and a Huntington Bank card worth $1,225 between Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to a report.

They told police they locked all the doors but left a kitchen window open.

When they returned home, they also noticed two folding chairs were moved and placed under the kitchen window and the back door was open.

Police didn’t notice any signs of forced entry.

Woman cited for driving the wrong way

BOARDMAN

An 80-year-old township woman was cited for driving the wrong way after she made a U-turn in a southbound lane of Interstate 680 just east of the U.S. Route 224 exit about 8 a.m. Tuesday and struck another car.

A spokeswoman for the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Betty Starr was southbound when she turned around but stayed in the southbound lanes, going north.

Burt Brown, 36, of Austintown was behind her and tried to avoid hitting her, but he collided with her car instead.

Neither driver was injured, the spokeswoman said.
