Farmers providing random acts of kindness

You may not know when, but a few ice cream customers will be very happy this summer when the check is paid by a local bank.

Farmers National Bank has partnered with Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt for the bank’s “Random Acts of Kindness” campaign.

Farmers decided to conduct the acts as a way to do more for the community, said Amber Wallace, senior vice president of marketing for Farmers.

The idea is part of a Facebook campaign to get customers who receive free ice cream to comment on the Farmers site, she said. Farmers considered using Facebook to let people know or provide hints about where the acts would occur but decided against it.

“We decided the best surprise was when people got to the front of the line and found out they were getting something for free,” Wallace said.

The first night was June 22 when Farmers paid for 193 orders totaling $723.90 at the Handel’s in Canfield on U.S. Route 224. Farmers paid for an hour of sales.

The efforts appear to have worked. A few people talked about the promotion on the Farmers Facebook page.

“The company is still determining if they will keep the program going beyond the summer,” Wallace said.

Wallace declined to provide any hints on when or where the random acts might occur in the future.

“I can say we are going to take the act to Trumbull and Columbiana county, so it will go throughout the Valley,” she said.
