Shepherd of the Valley in Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave., is offering an “Adult Vaccine Seminar” at 11 a.m. Wednesday to provide information on recommended vaccines. Kathy Salapata, RN, director of nursing for the city of Niles, will provide information to participants on how to keep themselves and their families safe from many avoidable diseases. This is not an immunization clinic.

Cooling assistance

YOUNGSTOWN

The Summer Crisis Program, a special component of the Home Energy Assistance Program offered by the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Assistance, assists income eligible Mahoning County residents and other Ohioans with cooling assistance during the summer months.

The program, administered by the Mahoning/Youngstown Community Action Partnership, which runs through Aug. 31, provides assistance with electric utility and/or cooling to households with incomes up to 175 percent of the 2013 Federal Poverty Guidelines.

The maximum benefit for customers is $175. The maximum benefit for customers served by rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities is $250. Hands-on guide

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County is offering its “Caregivers Support Program, Hands on Care: A Hands-On Guide for Caregivers” from noon to 4:30 p.m. July 25 in the Sim Lab, 4th Floor Jameson North Campus, 1211 Wilmington Ave.

The free event is open to all caregivers in the community and will focus on hands-on care techniques such as body mechanics, transfers, lifting, fall prevention and recovery; medication management; bedside care, such as positioning, bed baths, bed pans, mouth care, and changing beds with patients in them; skin care; and dealing with angry self or angry patient. This session will also include relaxation exercises and Tai Chi.

Free spine check

HOWLAND

Dr. Bryan Cecil, owner of the DC Chiropratic and Wellness Center, 1219 Niles- Cortland Road SE (state Route 46) across from Coates Car Wash, is offering a free spine check from noon to 3 p.m. July 24 for all people who have back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries or scoliosis.

Focus on the heart

The Dean Ornish Program For Reversing Heart Disease at Jameson Hospital is offering the six-week “Spectrum Program” from 10 a.m. to noon July 22, 29 and Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

The lifestyle improvement program can be tailored to suit almost anyone and is designed to impact heart disease, and the risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and family history. Participants of the Spectrum Program are encouraged to make small changes in their habits throughout six weeks.
