Tadarrell D. Mason, 20, of Townsend Avenue, Liberty, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to felonious assault on a peace officer and the attempted murder of his girlfriend.

Mason received the sentence in the courtroom of Judge Peter Kontos in the July 23, 2012, shooting of his pregnant girlfriend.

Police said Mason shot his girlfriend twice in the leg and once in the abdomen at an apartment on Townsend. She and her unborn child were treated at St. Elizabeth Heath Center in Youngstown for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Police said Mason was arrested by an off-duty Hubbard Township police officer about 15 minutes after the shooting.

The officer heard the call over his police radio and spotted Mason running east along state Route 304 at the intersection of Logan Way in Liberty.

After his arrest, Mason was taken to the Liberty Police Department for questioning. At that time, he struck a police officer in the head with a phone, police said.
