Maria Sharapova hires Connors as new coach
Maria Sharapova has hired Jimmy Connors as her new tennis coach.
A day after announcing she was parting with Thomas Hogstedt, Sharapova posted on her website Saturday that she would work with the eight-time major champion.
Connors coached Andy Roddick for two years before resigning in 2008. He briefly worked with Sharapova before the 2008 Australian Open.
Hogstedt coached Sharapova for nearly three years. She said Friday he wouldn’t be able to travel in the near future and they agreed she should find a new coach.
A winner of the career Grand Slam, the second-ranked Sharapova was upset in the second round at Wimbledon this year.
Wondolowski scores twice, US beats Cuba
SANDY, Utah
Chris Wondolowski — with his jersey name spelled correctly this time — scored two more goals to raise his total to five in two matches, and the United States came from behind to beat Cuba 4-1 Saturday and advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer quarterfinals.
Landon Donovan converted his second penalty kick of the tournament for his 53rd international goal, Joe Corona got his first international goal and Stuart Holden made his first start in nearly three years for the U.S., which has reached the quarterfinals of all 12 Gold Cups.
The Americans, who have not won the North and Central American and Caribbean championship since 2007, complete the first round Tuesday against Costa Rica in East Hartford, Conn., then likely will have their quarterfinal at Baltimore on July 21.
Last week of torture will decide Tour
LYON, France
Now, the Tour de France goes sharply uphill, much more sharply than last year.
More likely than not, the champion who will be crowned next Sunday in Paris will be the rider who copes best with this last week of vertical torture.
The pain starts today on the horrid climb of Mont Ventoux. The barren white mountain rises from the sunbaked plains of Provence.
The 181 brave souls who have survived the 2,325 kilometers (1,444 miles) ridden so far, out of 198 who started two weeks ago, will see the climb coming long before they hit it, so there will be plenty of time for apprehension, for butterflies in the stomach, to build.
