Miller firing upheld

WARREN

An arbitrator has upheld the firing of former Warren Patrolman Jeff Miller.

Miller was fired in December after he was arrested for a probation violation stemming from a 2011 Boardman car accident that included Miller’s being charged with operating a motor vehicle impaired. He was later convicted of the lesser charge of reckless operation.

Friend’s dog attacks

BOARDMAN

A Youngstown woman says her dog was attacked by another dog Thursday evening while visiting a friend’s house on Lynn Mar Avenue.

The woman and her daughter told police their dog Pepper was attacked by a pit bull while the woman’s daughter was walking her on a leash. Pepper’s owners took the dog to a 24-hour veterinarian and said the bill was $226. Police fined the other dog’s owner $250 for failing to keep that dog confined.

The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission, located in the Renaissance Center, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Suite 100, will be closed Friday for training purposes.

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio State Highway Patrol made two arrests after a 6:01 p.m. traffic stop Friday on Market Street at West Boston Avenue during a Violence Interdiction Patrol.

Troopers made a traffic stop on a vehicle containing two Western Pennsylvania residents and eventually charged them with felon heroin possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

Taken to the Mahoning County Adult Justice Center were Devin Zamary, 29, of Hermitage and Stacia Madasz, 24, of Mercer. Madasz also was arrested on a warrant out of Trumbull County, and Zamary also was charged with misdemeanor possession of criminal tools.

Troopers made 14 other traffic stops between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., resulting in four seat-belt citations.

Crash from diabetes

YOUNGSTOWN

A three-car crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. Friday on the corner of Canfield and Bears Den roads on the city’s West Side. Police believe one of the drivers went into diabetic shock.

Two people were injured and in stable condition. One person was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman and the other to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Work on a $350,000 road resurfacing project on Ohio Avenue is causing various daily lane restrictions. The project is slated for completion by mid-September.

500-balloon launch

NEW MIDDLEOWN

Eight-year-old Olivia Helmick and her team of volunteers will launch 500 balloons at 4 p.m. Sunday at Welker Park, 10711 Main St., to celebrate Olivia’s BackYard Carnival from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at the park.

Last year’s carnival, which raised over $2,000 for the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, outgrew Olivia’s backyard and had to be moved to the park, said Colleen Helmick, Olivia’s grandmother.

Olivia said she plans to raise even more money for the Rescue Mission this year. Every balloon in the launch will have a ticket in it to be redeemed for a free auction or raffle ticket valid the day of the carnival. Motorcycles crash

HOWLAND

Nicholas Cost, 56, of Warren suffered serious injuries in a two-motorcycle accident on North Road at Crestview Avenue at 10 p.m. Thursday. Cost was transported to St. Joseph Health Center after the accident, which ejected both motorcyclists. Troopers said David Robinson, 50, of Williamsport, Pa., was northbound on North Road when he tried to turn left onto Crestview Avenue but failed to yield, colliding with Cost, who was southbound on North Road.

Neither man was wearing a helmet. Robinson was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
