Man, dog in storage unit after home burns

Police Chief Vince D’Egidio said a man was found living in a state Route 170 New Middletown Road storage unit by an officer overnight Wednesday.
The man told police he was from Petersburg and his home had burned down and he ran out of money for a hotel, D’Egidio said.
The man told D’Egidio he had owned the unit and was there with his dog because no one would take him in. The man was taken to the Rescue Mission while his dog was given to Animal Charity to be housed there.
D’Egidio said the man is on several medications and can hopefully get his affairs in order while he is at the mission.
911 dispatcher reports harassment by caller

A Boardman Township 911 dispatcher says he was harassed by a Columbus man who called Wednesday morning threatening to kill himself.
The dispatcher said that while he tried locating the man, the man hung up the phone. Another call was made in an attempt to locate and help him. After about 28 calls later, the man told the dispatcher “he was a pretty good shot” and wanted to die by suicide by cop, according to a report.
Once the dispatcher determined the man was in Columbus, he contacted its police department who told him police there arrested the man on an unknown charge.
Deputy pleads innocent

Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputy Amos B. Case pleaded innocent to driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain assured clear distance at his Thursday arraignment in municipal court. Police said Case, 31, of Stiles Street Northwest, Warren, who was driving a pickup truck, rear-ended a car driven by Tracy L. Finney, 44, of Tuttle Lane, Girard, at Youngstown and North roads at 1:22 a.m. Tuesday, seriously injuring Finney, who went to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. A pre-trial hearing will be at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16. Case, who is on medical leave from the sheriff’s office, is represented by Atty. J. Gerald Ingram.
Birthing center open house is Saturday

The newly opened Mahoning Valley Birth Center, 3622 Belmont Ave., Suite 21, behind McDonald’s Restaurant, is having an open house for physicians at 11 a.m. and the general public from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday Visitors will be able to tour the facility and its birth suites and meet staff members, said owner Rachel Sieman of Boardman, a certified nurse-midwife. Sieman graduated in 1994 from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, attended Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, and received a master’s degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve University. Affiliated with Progressive Women’s Care in Boardman, Sieman has worked as a nurse at Sharon Regional Health System and St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Gun theft in Boardman

Police here are looking for the person who stole a handgun from a Boardman man’s Forest Ridge Road home between June 20 and July 5. The man contacted police Wednesday afternoon and told them he hides the .40-caliber handgun in a cardboard box in his garage to keep it away from his children, according to a report. The man said his garage was broken into in the past after a window on the main door was broken. He has boarded the door temporarily and believes the suspect was able to get in that way. Police entered the gun into a database for stolen firearms.
Caller threatens to kill Home Depot worker

A Youngstown woman was nearly run over by a 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada in the Home Depot parking lot on her way into work Wednesday afternoon.
After her shift, she drove to the police department to file a report and told police that she’s had ongoing issues with an acquaintance. Over the last two weeks, she has been receiving unwanted text messages from this person, according to a report.
When the woman walked into Home Depot following the incident, her manager called her into the office. She was told that a woman had called, threatening to kill her.
Police plan to interview the manager and retrieve copies of video surveillance.
Water service help

Protestant Family Service, 496 Glenwood Ave., received a $4,000 grant distributed by Youngstown Area Jewish Federation from its Thomases Family Endowment.
