Scrappers can’t hold off Spikes

STATE COLLEGE, PA.
Ryan Battaglia hit a three-run homer with two outs in the fourth inning to give the Mahoning Valley Scrappers the lead but the bullpen couldn’t hang on in a 4-3 loss to the State College Spikes in a New York-Penn League game on Monday at Medlar Field.
State College’s Jimmy Bosco and Cesar Valera hit back-to-back RBI singles off Ben Heller (0-2) in the seventh to rally the Spikes (13-8).
Cody Ferrell had three hits for the Scrappers (7-15), who have lost six straight. Nellie Rodriguez added two hits and scored a run.
Caleb Hamrick started and gave up two runs on four hits in six innings for Mahoning Valley. He struck out four and walked one. Breily Puerta pitched a scoreless eighth.
Ben O’Shea (3-1) got the win for State College while Kyle Webb earned his first save of the season.
