The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter will offer a Living with Alzheimer’s program next Tuesday at the Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave.

The program is designed to address the needs of persons in the early stages of memory loss and their care partners.

Participants will be informed on what they need to know and how to plan to meet the challenges of this journey in their lives. Living with Alzheimer’s meetings will be once a month for a total of five educational sessions.

Physicians issue warning on bug bites

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians is warning people to take precautions when outside to avoid being bitten by insects that could make them sick.

Six of the 63 species of mosquitoes in Ohio are known to transmit diseases. People can avoid mosquito bites by making sure doors have tight-fitting screens, cleaning rain gutters, and draining water from pool covers.

Cooling assistance

A special component of the Home Energy Assistance Program offered by the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Assistance, administered by MYCAP, is the Summer Crisis Program. The program assists income-eligible Mahoning County residents and other Ohioans with cooling assistance during the summer months.

The program runs through Aug. 31. It will provide electric utility and/or cooling assistance to households with incomes up to 175 percent of the 2013 Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Residents must call MYCAP to make an appointment at the Youngstown office toll free at 1-866-223-1125, or at the Western Mahoning County office in Sebring at 330-938-6166 .

Hospital reaches social media milestone

Alliance Community Hospital recently celebrated a milestone reaching 1,000 followers on Facebook.

“We are very excited about the continuous growth of our online community,” said Mariah Gibbons, E-Communications Specialist at ACH. “Our Facebook page is a great place for the community to stay up-to-date with new hospital programs and services, local health events, and general health and wellness information.”
