Lightning suspends Class B game

The championship of the Youngstown Class B League will have to wait another day to be decided.

Multiple thunderstorms in the area Saturday forced the suspension of Game Two until today at 5 p.m. at Cene Park.

Astro Falcons, which leads the best-of-three series 1-0, also had a 4-3 lead over Creekside Fitness in the third inning.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., umpires and league officials observed lightning in the area. With more storms approaching the Mahoning Valley, the decision was made to suspend the game, which had begun at 5 p.m.

A three-hour rain delay interrupted the second inning

The suspension came just after the Falcons rallied to score four runs in the inning.

Adam Becker, Jim Standohar, Troy Martin and Bubba Wells all reached safely and scored runs to begin the third.

Creekside did its damage in the top of the second when Scott Pierce reached on an error and came home on Zac Miller’s single-outfield error. Miller strolled home on an infield error moments later. Steve Sada gave Creekside a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Top-seeded Ohio Glaciers and third-seeded Astro Falcons will meet today at 2 p.m. on Cene 1 in the opening game of the best-of-3 Class b championship series.

Glaciers defeated Kuboff & Associates 9-3 on Saturday to finish off a two-game sweep in the semifinal round. Astro Falcons had to beat second-seeded Creekside Fitness twice, by scores of 6-3 and 20-1, to advance.

Adam Knight pitched a complete game in the Glacier victory, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Evan Kendall had the big bat for the Glaciers with four hits, one a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Greg Dunham added two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Jake Smith had an RBI double among his two hits.

Alex Gentile hit a two-run double for Kuboff while R.J. Leon banged out two hits and scored a run.

Astro scored twice in the fourth inning and four times in the fifth to even its series against Creekside in Saturday’s first game.

Devin Rice pitched five shutout innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Danny Boerio thwarted the Creekside comeback over the last two innings.

Luch Romeo hit a two-run double for the Falcons, Joe Crank hit a two-run single, Eddie Crump and Vinny Ruberto each had a hit and a run scored, and Kip DeShields had an RBI and a run scored.

Alec Hammond had two hits for Creekside and Ray Scala and Josh McBride each had a hit and a run scored.

The decisive third game of the series turned out to be no contest as Astro built a 10-0 lead in the first three innings. Kyle Benyo led the offense with two doubles, a single, three RBIs and a run scored. Crank had a double, two singles and four runs; DeShields hit a double and a single, scored three times and drove in two runs; Ruberto doubled and drove in four runs; and Hunter Snyder also contributed four RBIs.
