Pilgrimage planned
YOUNGSTOWN
A pilgrimage is planned July 14 at the Shrine of the Holy Cross at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 526 W. Rayen Ave., to mark the celebration of the Year of Faith. It was pronounced by the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church as a response to the initiative of Pope Benedict XVI for the universal church, as well as the 1025th anniversary of the baptism of Ukraine.
The pilgrimage will be led by His Excellency John Bura, Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio. Bishop George V. Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will participate.
The shrine was chosen for this pilgrimage as it was dedicated in 1986 to commemorate Holy Trinity’s 75th anniversary and to observe the 1,000th anniversary in 1988 of Ukraine’s acceptance of Christianity.
The pilgrimage will start at 3 p.m. with a Moleben to St. Volodymyr, prince of Kyiv-Rus’ who converted Ukraine to Christianity.
A lesser blessing of water and renewal of the baptismal promises are part of the event because St. Volodymyr’s people were baptized in the Dnipro River in Kyiv.
