Fire destroys house
YOUNGSTOWN
A fire that started in the basement destroyed a vacant home on the city’s South Side.
Firefighters were called to 514 Alexander St. at 11:54 p.m. Thursday. The fire originated in the basement and went up the house’s interior walls, according to a fire report. Firefighters had it controlled by 1:46 a.m. Friday.
Firefighters are investigating to determine the cause. The house was worth about $4,400 and is considered a total loss, according to a fire report.
Road work
AUSTINTOWN
Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, state Route 11 northbound just north of U.S. Route 224 will be reduced to one lane for bridge repairs. The Ohio Department of Transportation said the restriction will remain in place until 3 p.m. next Saturday.
Man charged

A traffic stop for an expired license plate and delayed turn signal turned into a weapons-offense charge for a Youngstown man.
Dwayne A. Moody Jr., 23, was a passenger in the Nissan Pathfinder when police stopped it on Mahoning Avenue. Moody tried explaining to the officer that he had a valid sticker for the vehicle, but could not provide it, according to a police report.
After Moody and the two other occupants got out of the vehicle for it to be towed, police said they found a loaded handgun in the front passenger side. Moody is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having fictitious plates.
Fundraiser set
Pizza Hut restaurants throughout Northeast Ohio will raise funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation from next Saturday to July 31 to contribute to cures for kids with cancer. The drive will be kicked off by hosting stands in 22 Pizza Hut locations.
All 76 participating area Pizza Huts will sell paper lemons throughout the second half of the month to raise funds for the battle against childhood cancer.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation emerged from the front-yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was born in 1996 and died in 2004. Locally, all Pizza Hut restaurants in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will participate.
Ice-cream social

An ice-cream social fundraising event will offer a sneak peek inside the new Tri-Lakes Branch Library, 13820 Mahoning Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Admission is $5 per person at the door. The new $2 million branch, scheduled to open July 22, will replace separate North Jackson and Lake Milton public libraries that closed last month.
Man found shot

Police found a man shot in the leg in a driveway at a 162 Idylwild Ave. NE home about 4:40 a.m. Thursday.
Michael Sallaz, 51, told police he had just arrived at the home from another address, and a man wanted money from him. When he told the man he had only $2, Sallaz was pushed to the ground and shot in the leg, reports said.
Officers recovered a spent bullet. Sallaz was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment.
