Struck by car

YOUNGSTOWN

An 18-year old city woman was charged with felonious assault after a man said she struck him with a vehicle early Thursday.

Brandy Johnson, no address provided, was housed in the Mahoning County jail. A man told police that a vehicle with three women inside was in his driveway at about 4 a.m. He said they had had an altercation earlier in the week with a friend of his. He told them his friend wasn’t there and to leave his property. He said they yelled and swore and then left but returned a few minutes later and struck him with the car.

Johnson told police she was driving but said the man pulled her friend’s hair and spit in her face.

The man suffered a cut to his palm and a scrape on his shoulder. He was treated by ambulance personnel.

Drug-testing forum

STRUTHERS

Struthers Board of Education will have an open forum to discuss mandatory drug testing for the district’s student athletes in grades seven through 12 at its regular meeting July 16. Members of the district’s drug-testing committee will present their proposal, The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

State of Weathersfield

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Township trustees will make a State of the Township presentation to residents at their regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The presentation will include an update and discussion of all ongoing projects and future initiatives.

‘Yell for Well’ event

CANFIELD

St. Michael Parish and Boy Scout Troop 115 are having a music-festival fundraiser, dubbed “Yell for the Well,” from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at the church, 350 N. Broad St., to drill water wells for Haitian communities.

Boy Scout Nick Crescimanno is planning the daylong festival with food, games and live music for his Eagle Scout service project with the help of Food for the Poor, a relief organization that provides aid to South and Central American countries.

If the goal is reached, Food for the Poor (foodforthepoor.org )will double the funds to provide an additional water well. Featured bands so far are JD Eicher and the Goodnights, the Classic Cruisers and the Dickey White Band. Route 7 closing

Wellsville

Utility work will close state Route 7 Monday morning near the state Route 39/ Salineville exit in Columbiana County. Horizon Chillicothe Telephone will be installing a new overhead fiber-optic cable across the highway at about 10 a.m. Traffic will be stopped in both directions. Delays should not be longer than 30 minutes, but motorists are urged to use caution and be prepared for a slight delay.

Butterfly Festival

Youngstown

Southside Community Garden, at Williamson Avenue and Erie Street, will host a butterfly festival from 1 to 4 p.m. July 20. The event is sponsored by the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., the Wean Foundation and Grow Youngstown.

Guests are invited to feed and watch for butterflies and explore the community garden. City Councilwoman Janet Tarpley, D-6th, and the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown will attend. Children’s garden programs will be provided. The Joshua Project gospel group will perform.
