Fire destroys South Side home Thursday


YOUNGSTOWN — A fire that started in the basement destroyed a vacant home on the city’s South Side.

Firefighters were called to 514 Alexander St. at 11:54 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, the fire at the two-story structure was going strong. It originated in the basement and went up the house’s interior walls, according to a fire report. Firefighters arrived five minutes after the call and had it controlled by 1:46 a.m. today.

Firefighters are investigating to determine the cause. The house was worth about $4,400 and is considered a total loss, a fire report states.
