Sciortino traffic stop report going to attorney general’s office

The results of an investigation about a traffic stop involving Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s office May 26 are being forwarded to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Prosecutor Paul Gains and Sheriff Jerry Greene made the decision after a meeting in Gains’ office late this morning to go over the report of the investigation, which was done by the Summit County Sheriff’s office.

Sciortino also released a statement saying in part: “I am deeply regretful for the unfortunate circumstances of that evening.”

Sciortino was pulled over on U.S. 422 for a report of a drunken driver and was briefly detained after flunking a field sobriety test.

But two sheriff’s supervisors intervened, and instead Sciortino was driven home by one of the supervisors. Greene suspended one supervisor, denoted another and referred the sergeant who made the initial stop to the department’s disciplinary procedures.
