Science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers are the focus of this week-long workshop targeting girls in fourth through sixth grades.

The YWCA of Youngstown in collaboration with Mahoning Valley Manufacturer’s Coalition, OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Center for Science and Technology, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office and the city schools announces a pilot program — Summer Manufacturing Institute — July 22 to 26.

The program targeting girls seeks to provide an introduction to manufacturing careers available.

This workshop is sponsored by the Raymond John Wean Foundation and the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

The focus of the program is to promote STEM careers. Although this program is co-ed, the YWCA is particular encouraging girls to apply.

Women make an average of 77 cents to a $1 that men make.

The YWCA’s economic empowerment strategy aims to educate women in non-traditional careers that typically have a higher pay compared to the traditional careers that women choose. An average experienced manufacturing employee makes $69,454 annually.

The program is open to girls in fourth through sixth grades. Enrollment is $15 for the week-long workshop, which will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 22 to 26. Before and after care is available to those who need it at the YWCA Summer Care Camp Empower.

The workshop will include visits to manufacturing plants in the Valley, theory classes about manufacturing careers, design challenges, journaling and more. The workshop will conclude on July 26 with a final showcase of the week’s design projects at an open house breakfast event for family and friends.
