Former Ohio officers appeal conviction in drunken man's death

DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) — Two former Ohio officers found guilty of dereliction of duty in a case where an intoxicated man died are challenging their convictions.

Sean Carpenter, a former Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, and Derek Beggs, a former Delaware County deputy sheriff, were convicted in December.

The Columbus Dispatch reports both were back in court Tuesday in Delaware, near Columbus, for arguments before the 5th District Court of Appeals.

The officers dropped off an intoxicated man at a Taco Bell last July after they found him in his truck in a highway median. The man later was hit by a car and killed while walking along a road afterward.

Attorneys for the officers argued they had no responsibility to arrest the man.
