Boardman woman saves three newborn kittens from trash can

A Boardman woman’s instincts took over Saturday morning when she heard kittens mewing from her neighbor’s trash can.
Nicole Myers, 34, told police she heard her neighbor outside, before returning indoors a few moments later.
That’s when Myers heard kittens crying.
It sounded like the sound was coming from her neighbor’s trash can, so she went out, opened the can and discovered two kittens tied up in white plastic bags, according to a police report.
She removed the kittens and took them to her sister’s house, where they were cared for.
When police arrived at Martin’s Mobile Home Estates on South Avenue, Myers told them she barely knows her neighbor except that she lives alone and has several cats.
Officers asked Myers to show them where she found the kittens, and that’s when a third kitten could be heard from the same trash can. Police found another newborn kitten in a plastic bag. The kitten also was taken to Myers’ sister’s house.
Myers could not be reached to comment on the police narrative.
Police spoke to the neighbor, and she admitted the kittens were born earlier that day and that the mother wasn’t feeding them. When she contacted a veterinarian, according to the report, she was told all the vet could do was put them down.
The sergeant on the case said he’s called the officers who were on the scene to determine why an arrest wasn’t made, saying a follow-up is in order.
A possible charge would be cruelty to animals, a second-degree misdemeanor.
