City firefighters battled two blazes on Sunday

YOUNGSTOWN — Firefighters battled blazes at vacant houses about 12 hours apart Sunday.

Crews allowed a vacant 1516 Heasley St. home to burn down after they were called about 1:35 a.m. and found the home engulfed in flames. A ladder truck was used to douse other houses to protect them from the flames. Damage is listed at $4,640.

About 1:30 p.m., crews were called to 2408 Wydesteel Ave. and found smoke coming from the second and third floor. Inside they managed to put the fire out but found numerous holes in the floor and roof and the stairs to the third floor were missing. Damage there is estimated at $7,000.

No one was injured in either fire.
