Friends of the Library to meet
The Friends of Poland Library will meet Feb. 5, in the library’s meeting room and install a new slate of officers: Kitty Heineman (president), Lee Wright (vice president), Bertha Eszenyi (secretary), and Glenda Hoagland (treasurer). The meeting begins with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public. There will be a presentation on a summer trip to Cuba, information on the April spring luncheon and more.
In the event of inclement weather, the Friends follow the schedule of Poland Schools. When Poland Schools are closed, the meeting is canceled. Hostesses for the meeting are Emma Eggleston, Rekha Desai, Carol McCoy and Sue Perry.

High school hosts college admissions workshop
There will be a College Admissions Workshop at Poland Seminary High School Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. This workshop is geared toward parents of juniors and sophomores and is intended to answer questions concerning the college admissions process.
Greg Landis, senior assistant Director of Admissions from the University of Akron, along with Judy Volosin and Rob Sainato, the Poland High School guidance counselors, will also address other topics, such as college admission tests, college visits, the college application process and the many resources available in the guidance office.
Poland SOV ready to deal you in
The monthly card games are starting again at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland. Card players of all kinds can play on Jan. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and no reservations are needed. For more information, call 330-726-7110, extension 0.
Making Kids Count benefit dinner
On March 15, Making Kids Count will host its first benefit dinner at Avion on the Water in Canfield. Proceeds from the event will go to the various programs Making Kids Count sponsors. This event will include dinner, dessert, a cash bar, chance auction and entertainment. Invitations will be mailed in February. Baby brilliant set at library
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months. The Poland library will host 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Father-daughter princess dance at Boardman Park
Boardman Park will host its 10th annual Father-Daughter princess dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The dance will be on three nights this year: Feb. 15 and 16 from 6-9 p.m., and Feb. 17 from 5-8 p.m. This semi-formal dance will include dinner, dancing to DJ music and more. A professional photo for a keepsake of this event will also be included. Tickets are now on sale. They can be purchased at the park office, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Fun for 4s and 5s at library
The Poland library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader Tuesday at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales for toddlers set in January
Join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader at 10 and 11 a.m. on Thursday. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Book discussion to focus on “The Charge”
The Poland library will host a book discussion facilitated by Greg Smith and sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC at 8 a.m. Jan. 29. All sessions are open to the public. For more information, call 330-740-6086.

The Poland library will host sleepy-time fun for the family on Jan. 28 from 6:30-7 p.m. Put on your PJs and bring out the whole family for stories and more fun.
Piloxing in the park in January
This unique program, instructed by Angela Lubonovich, mixes Pilates and boxing into a fat-blasting and muscle-toning workout guaranteed to whip you into shape. Bring a mat and water. Classes are held at Pioneer Pavilion Jan. 30 from 6-7 p.m. Call REC to register; the fee is $10 per session.
Do Pilates in the park
Increase your understanding of various Pilate’s concepts and movements with instructor Angela Lubonovich Jan. 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Classes held at Pioneer Pavilion.

Trim a tree for January
Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during regular hours throughout the month of January. For children of all ages.
Friends of the Library won’t meet in January
Friends of the Poland Library will not meet in January. The next regular meeting is in Feb. 5 at 10 a.m.
Yoga at Fellows Riverside Gardens
Join Marina Perdos in the mornings (9:30-11 a.m.) and Karres Cvetkovich in the evenings (5:30-7 p.m.) for a blend of energizing yoga styles that will help you keep a healthy outlook Tuesdays and Thursdays in January. Students at all levels are welcome. Bring a mat and small blanket. There is a $10 fee per class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information.
T’ai Chi Step One in the Gardens
Ease stress, improve health, and increase vitality Wednesdays in January from noon until 1 p.m. Join Marie Lew in warm-ups, breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information. There is a $10 fee per class.
Learn about ice making
During the early 1900s, the Youngstown Ice Company harvested ice for commercial use from Mill Creek and the Mahoning River. Look back at the ice harvesting industry and then take a walk to see what remains of the Youngstown Ice Company’s heyday at Mill Creek Park Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Those interested can then continue with a hike around Lake Glacier. Meet at the Davis Center. This hike is a moderate rating with hills and steps and will span 1/4 or 3 miles.
Free pancakes on Feb. 5
IHOP is giving away free pancakes on Feb. 5 to celebrate National Pancake Day.
