The Austintown Fitch jazz band performed a small concert for people in the Southern Park mall Dec. 21. The jazz band performed many holiday classics, such as Jingle Bells. Up On the House Top featured saxophone, trombone, bari saxophone, and guitar solos, while The Christmas Song had trumpet, saxophone, trombone and piano solos.

The band went on to play Winter Wonderland and A Charlie Brown Christmas (alto saxophone and trombone solos). The band performed a special rendition of You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch in which the jazz band director, Wes O’Connor, did the part of the speaker. The song also offered solos for the tenor saxophone and the trumpet.

The trombone section was featured in Feliz Navidad. Jazz band member Scott Williams performed a vocal solo in his arrangement of the Bruce Springsteen classic, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. The band ended its concert with a funky version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, which contained a bass guitar solo.

“We decided to play in the mall because I thought it would be cheerful for both the students and people in the mall to hear such great music, especially for the holidays,” said O’Connor. “The mall is really in close proximity to our school and we wanted to do something the community would enjoy.”
