NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION Core concepts

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. espoused the six principles of nonviolence, all of which were read aloud during Monday’s 30th annual community workshop at First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown to celebrate King’s life and legacy. Those who practice this method believe:

Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people, and is nonviolent resistance to evil.

Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding, with the end result being redemption and reconciliation.

Nonviolence aims to defeat injustice, not people, while recognizing that evildoers also are victims.

Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform and accepts unearned suffering without retaliation.

Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate and that such love does not sink to the level of the hater.

Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice.
