Penn State’s Michael Zordich, a Cardinal Mooney High graduate, will play in tonight’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the Home Depot Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Zordich will play fullback for the National team. Zordich appeared in all 12 games for Penn State last fall with five starts, rushing 80 times for 301 yards and four TDs and catching 15 passes for 152 yards for the Nittany Lions (8-4, 6-2).

Youngstown’s Boone to fight Webster

NEWARK, N.J.

Youngstown boxer Darnell “Deezol” Boone will fight New Jersey native Derrick “Take it to the bank” Webster (13-0, 7 KOs) in a six-round super middleweight bout tonight at the Robert Treat Hotel.

Boone (19-19-3) has beaten six undefeated fighters in his career. The fight will be broadcast on Go Fight Live (www.gfl.tv) beginning at 6 p.m.

Gabby Figueroa of Austintown Fitch recorded a distance of 58-feet, 11-inches in the weight throw to snap the Youngstown State facility record and ranks first in the nation in an indoor track meet held there.

Also for Fitch, Sam Ortz won the 60-meters hurdles to rank first in Ohio.

The boys 4x200 meter relay team of Joe Harrington, Nathan Bowlen, Rob Venters and Ty’Reese Anderson ran a first-place 1:32.5.

Figueroa and the boys 4x200 relay have met the qualifying standards to enter the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City in March.

Purdue’s Hazell names eight to new staff

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.

New Purdue coach Darrell Hazell is filling out his staff.

Former Florida State assistant head coach-linebackers coach Greg Hudson will be the new defensive coordinator. Three assistants will follow Hazell from Kent State to Purdue: Jon Heacock will continue to coach cornerbacks, Marcus Freeman will continue to coach linebackers and Jafar Williams will continue to coach running backs.

Hazell also has named former Boston College assistant Jim Bollman as his offensive line coach and former Virginia Tech assistant Kevin Sherman as receivers coach. Tommy Cook will be supervisor of football operations and Doug Davis will be head strength and conditioning coach.

Kent and Wiseman elected to bowling hall

SEATTLE

Doug Kent, winner of 10 Professional Bowlers Association Tour titles, including four major championships, and Danny Wiseman, a 12-time tour winner with one major, are going into the PBA Hall of Fame.

Commissioner Tom Clark says Friday that Kent, of Newark, N.Y., and Wiseman, of Baltimore, will be inducted during the PBA’s Hall of Fame dinner on March 30 in Indianapolis. No candidate on the Meritorious Service or PBA50 Tour ballots received the required two-thirds majority of votes cast needed for election.

They had remarkably similar careers. Wiseman joined the PBA in 1987 and has earned just over $1.55 million.

Ali celebrates birthday with Foreman bout

Muhammad Ali had a knockout of a 71st birthday, celebrating with friends and family and watching a video of his “Rumble in the Jungle” win over George Foreman in Africa.

Ali’s former business manager, Gene Kilroy, said the fighter — who has long suffered from Parkinson’s — particularly enjoyed a big birthday cake in the celebration at his home in a gated community just outside Phoenix.
