In what can only be called a three peat, eighth-grade Canfield Village Middle School student Max Lee was crowned the 2013 Spelling Bee Champion at the school’s annual spelling bee Jan. 9.
For the third year in a row, Lee was named the spelling bee overall champion, which garnered him a standing ovation from the entire student body.
Students qualified for the bee by winning a classroom spelling bee, with each homeroom class having a representative, along with one student from each individual Language Arts class and four winners from last year.
Each grade level crowned a winner, with Elisa Accordino named fifth-grade champion, Hafsa Hassan named sixth-grade champion, Sam Accordino named seventh-grade champion and Jack Cross named eighth-grade champion. Lee and all grade level champions received a Webster’s New World College Dictionary.
Brother and sister Elisa and Sam Accordino made this year’s bee a family affair and were in direct competition with each other down to the final rounds.
Lee ended the bee in the 10th round and earned his overall champion title by spelling the word “incarceration” correctly. He will now represent Canfield Village Middle School in The Vindicator’s Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University in March for the chance to move on to the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C.
News anchor Stan Boney of WYTV Channel 33 served as the spelling bee’s pronouncer. Spelling bee judges included Marylou Thacker, Michelle DeFabio, Julie Webb, Melissa Nagy, Vicki Latimer and Erica Putro, spelling bee coordinator. Jim Volenik served as recorder.
As grade level champions, Elisa Accordino, Hafsa Hassan and Sam Accordino are guaranteed a spot in next year’s spelling bee.
“Congratulations to all our spellers and winners. Thanks to everyone who helped make this spelling bee a huge success,” said Joe Maroni, CVMS seventh- and eighth-grade principal, at the end of the bee.
