Canfield Community Band to perform benefit concert

The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a winter concert Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. at Canfield High School on Cardinal Drive.

The concert is a benefit performance for Operation Blessing. A volunteer group of 40 or more members, Operation Blessing distributes food items to Mahoning County families in need. Housed at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, Operation Blessing is supported by several Canfield-area churches, high school groups and local businesses, as well as individuals.

There is no admission charge for the concert. To help carry on its mission, support for Operation Blessing is requested in the form of non-perishable food items and monetary donations.

Local writers group to meet in Canfield

The Monday Night Writers will meet Jan. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield. Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour session will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ can bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group.

Baby brilliant set at Canfield library

The Canfield library will host 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months at 10 a.m. on Monday. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales for toddlers set in January

Join the Canfield library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Jan. 23, and 30. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales to tails set at library

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m., which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Fun for 4s and 5s at library

The Canfield library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader Tuesday, as well as Jan. 22, and 29 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Know your snow trivia

Answer snow trivia facts with a true or false; take a wild guess or look it up at the Canfield library during regular hours throughout January. Correct contests will be entered in a drawing to win a prize. For school-age children.

Hot chocolate tasting at library

The Canfield library will be hosting a hot chocolate tasting on a cold snowy day Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with a variety of hot chocolates.

Vote on your favorite and the library will post the results. Marshmallows provided. For teens in grades 7-12.

Apple digital downloading at library

Bring your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone to the Canfield library on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and the librarians will show you how to download digital books from the library’s Digital Catalog on the website. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register.

Get your blood pressure checked at library

The Canfield library will host a free Blood Pressure Check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Holiday closings at library

All libraries in the Public of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Breakfast botany is Jan. 25

T’ai Chi Step One in the Gardens

Workout boot camp is today

Kick start your workout with a jam-packed hour of head-to-toe fitness today from 10-11 a.m. This functional boot camp will consist of drills that benefit the beginner exerciser to the advanced athlete. The class is instructed by JoAnne Maloney and will take place at Yellow Creek Lodge. Call REC to register; the fee is $10.

Winter farmscape set at Mill Creek Park

Hike at Mill Creek Park and explore what winter has brought to the diverse habitats along the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroParks Farm tomorrow at 2 p.m. This hike has a moderate rating for unpaved trails and is 2 miles long.

See shades of winter at the gorge

Find out how many colors Mother Nature displays in the dead of winter as you search the Gorge area for matches to the shades in a big box of Crayolas. Meet at the Lanterman’s Mill parking lot on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. This hike has a moderate rating for possible icy trails and it will span 2 miles.

Learn about ice making

During the early 1900s, the Youngstown Ice Company harvested ice for commercial use from Mill Creek and the Mahoning River. Look back at the ice harvesting industry and then take a walk to see what remains of the Youngstown Ice Company’s heyday at Mill Creek Park Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Those interested can then continue with a hike around Lake Glacier. Meet at the Davis Center. This hike is a moderate rating with hills and steps and will span 1/4 or 3 miles.

Health and wellness walks in Mill Creek

Meet at the MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead on Jan. 23 at 9 a.m. to hike for the health of it and experience the many benefits of walking. The Jan. 9 hike has an easy rating and will be 1 or 3 miles and the Jan. 23 hike has a moderate rating and will be 2 or 4 miles.

Loose Knit Group meets in January

All hands helping to “Warm Up America,” are welcome at the Loose Knit Group Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. until noon, both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for more information.

Do yoga with MetroMutts dogs

Mill Creek Park will be hosting yoga with your dog tomorrow at 11 a.m. All levels are welcome, including those who have never practiced yoga. Dress comfortably, bring a mat and water for yourself and treats for your dog. Class will be conducted by Maureen Lauer-Gatta, owner of The Yoga Room in Warren, Ohio. Classes will be at Pioneer Pavilion. The cost for MetroMutts members is $5 and $10 for non-members.

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley

Ford Nature Center’s staff will tell you all about nonsense nature on Jan. 22. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. with the program at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Meet at MetroParks Farm.

Make good luck bean wreaths

It has been said that beans will bring good luck in the New Year. Children ages 6 and older can bring good fortune to their homes by making a colorful wreath of different kinds of dried beans at Mill Creek Park on Jan. 19 from 1:30-3 p.m. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The fee is $9 for residents and $12 for non-residents.

Get free pancakes on Feb. 5

IHOP is giving away free pancakes on Feb. 5 to celebrate National Pancake Day. The fundraiser aims to raise $3 million to kick off Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 30th anniversary. Visit any IHOP location to participate.
