Military academies

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Four students from Jefferson, Mahoning and Trumbull counties are among the 60 Ohioans from 36 counties nominated by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown to attend West Point, Merchant Marine, Air Force and Naval academies. A nomination does not guarantee acceptance. Each academy’s admissions board decides who receives an appointment. Area nominees are: Meadow Jackson, Jefferson County Christian School, Steubenville, Jefferson County, Naval Academy; Emily Conroy, Canfield High School, Canfield, Mahoning County, West Point; Gregory Haylett, Poland Seminary High School, New Middletown, Mahoning County, Merchant Marine Academy; Kristen Boye, Howland High School, Howland, Trumbull County, Air Force Academy.

Dr. Joseph Pederzolli will host a free workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at EyeCare and Vision Therapy Center, 11995 South Ave. The workshop will offer the opportunities for parents to ask questions about their children’s possible vision- related learning problems and to learn the signs that a child may have such a problem.

Grazing workshops

Carrollton

Winter Grazing Workshops are planned for Jan. 24, Feb. 28 and March 28 at Carrollton Ponderosa, 1117 Canton Road NW. They will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the back conference room. Kevin Swope of the Natural Resources Conservation Service will explain what makes a conservation plan. Troyce Barnett, an NRCS state grazing specialist, will have a presentation on warm-season grasses in a grazing system. Representatives for Witmer Seed and Byron Seeds will discuss pasture production restoration, and a panel will discuss planting dates and how to prepare. The workshops are presented by Eastern Ohio Grazing Council in cooperation with Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson, Mahoning, Stark and Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation districts and the NRCS.
