Workforce program

Youngstown

The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership, 1325 Fifth Ave., will share the details of its Workforce Development Program in informational sessions. Those interested are required to attend one of four sessions offered, on Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Workforce Development Program is for adults 18 years of age or older who are seeking employment but lack the necessary skills employers are looking for. The four-week class teaches participants computer instruction, employment search assistance and competencies that employers request in their employees, regardless of the employment position.

The information sessions give an outline of expectations for training and an opportunity to complete necessary forms. Classes are scheduled to begin the week of Jan. 14 at the MYCAP offices. To make an appointment for one of the information sessions call 330-747-7921, ext. 1190.

Mobile home fire

WEST middlesex, pa.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a mobile home Friday evening at 7 Edgewood Drive.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which was reported about 7 p.m. Firefighters from West Middlesex and Farrell were on the scene with Sharon Fire Department on standby. The fire remains under investigation.

Toys and Tunes

Salem

The Salem Historical Society’s exhibit “Baby Boomers: Toys and Tunes,” originally displayed during Salem’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, will be kept open through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Dale Shaffer Research Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave.

There is no admission charge. Parking is available at the city municipal parking lot on South Lundy.

Hit songs from 1946 through 1964 will be backdrop music for the exhibit. Guests are invited to enjoy games and activities from the same time period that will be on display.

The museum’s gift shop sells historical items of interest, including DVDs, CDs and books of Salem’s history. New items include the 2013 Salem Community calendar featuring gas stations.

Free photo workshops

BOARDMAN

The Davis Family YMCA on McClurg Road will offer free photographer workshops from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and 19.

Award-winning photographer Richard Fisher will cover the basics of digital photography, and participants are encouraged to bring their DSLR or point and shoot cameras to the class.

The workshops are open to the public, but reservations are required and can be made by calling the YMCA at 330-480-5656.

New millionaire

Youngstown

Shaden J. Amireh of Youngstown claimed one of four $1 million top prizes in the Ohio Lottery’s 2013 New Year’s Raffle. After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 29 percent, Amireh receives $710,000. Amireh purchased the winning ticket at Convenient Food Mart, 1108 Niles Cortland Road. Convenient Food Mart receives a $5,000 agent sales bonus.

The New Year’s Raffle game offered 3,334 total prizes, with the Ohio Lottery drawing four $1 million prizes, ten prizes of $10,000, 120 prizes of $1,500, 1,000 prizes of $500 and 2,200 prizes of $100. Customers can claim New Year’s Raffle’s prizes at the Lottery’s downtown Cleveland headquarters or at any one of its nine regional offices.

Felon indicted

WARREN

A 23-year-old Lane Drive Southwest man has been indicted on one count of felonious assault and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm in an Oct. 6 incident at the BP gas station, 1290 E. Market St.

Daron Warfield Jr. could get more than 10 years in prison if convicted on the charges. He was bound over to a Trumbull County grand jury on three counts of felonious assault, but the grand jury refused to indict on two of the counts.

Police said Warfield fired a gun at three people outside of the gas station at 12:30 a.m. Police recovered nine bullet casings.

Warfield will be arraigned on the charges at 11 a.m. Jan. 14 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Lowellville Mayor James Iudiciani has called a special village council meeting, set to follow the reorganization meeting 11 a.m. today at city hall, 140 E. Liberty St. A senior citizen bus grant, proposal for a school resource officer ordinance contract with Lowellville schools, police department budget and other village business will be discussed.

Regular meetings of the Youngstown Civil Service Commission will be at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in the commission office, seventh floor, city hall, 26 S. Phelps St.

New state Legislature gets set to convene

COLUMBUS, Ohio

The next leader of the Ohio Senate is restructuring the legislative panels that hear testimony and debate bills as lawmakers begin work on the next two-year budget.

State Sen. Keith Faber is creating the new committees to more closely reflect the complex issues contained in the budget.

The Celina Republican takes over as Senate president next week when the newly elected Legislature begins its work. The General Assembly will spend most of the first half of the year debating Ohio’s spending blueprint.

Republicans will hold a 23-10 advantage in the Senate when senators are sworn in Monday.

Fatal I-77 accident

AKRON

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in a northeast Ohio highway crash that sent a car rolling over on the side of the highway, ejecting all four occupants and killing the driver.

The Summit County sheriff’s office says the accident about 12:50 a.m. Friday along Interstate 77 in Green killed 44-year-old Stacey Juniel of Akron.

Three passengers were taken to Akron City Hospital with injuries. No medical updates were available Friday.

The sheriff’s office says the car ran off the right side of the highway and rolled over. The sheriff says alcohol is believed to be a factor.
