Mooney hosts meeting regarding new Chinese class
Cardinal Mooney High School is adding a Chinese language course to its course offerings. Principal John Young noted that the course “reflects the growing inter-relationship between the Chinese and American economies. We were alerted to the need for the course by alumni and parents who have traveled to China on business.”
The courses will be taught by Lauren Mangino, who is a retired teacher from the Warren City Schools. Mangino has traveled in China and taught Chinese courses at Warren Harding.
An informational meeting for parents and students interested in the course has been scheduled for Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney. Details about the course offering and requirements will be discussed at that time.
Baby brilliant set at Canfield library
The Canfield library will host 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months at 10 a.m. on Jan. 14. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales for toddlers set in January
Join the Canfield library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Jan. 16, 23, and 30. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales to tails set at library
Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m., which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Fun for 4s and 5s at library
The Canfield library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader Tuesday, as well as Jan. 15, 22, and 29 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Know your snow trivia at library
Answer snow trivia facts with a true or false; take a wild guess or look it up at the Canfield library during regular hours throughout January. Correct contests will be entered in a drawing to win a prize. For school-age children.
Lego my library is Jan. 8
Children, age 6 and up, will meet at the Canfield library from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 8 and create Lego designs. Legos will be provided.
Hot chocolate tasting at library
The Canfield library will be hosting a hot chocolate tasting on a cold snowy day Jan. 17 at 2:30 p.m. with a variety of hot chocolates. Vote on your favorite and the library will post the results. Marshmallows provided. For teens in grades 7-12.

Get your blood pressure checked at library
The Canfield library will host a free Blood Pressure Check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 15.
Swap your coupons with others at library
If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and noon on Jan. 11-12 at the Canfield library to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.
Holiday closings at library
All libraries in the Public of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Breakfast botany is Jan. 25

Piloxing in the park in January
This unique program, instructed by Angela Lubonovich, mixes Pilates and boxing into a fat-blasting and muscle-toning workout guaranteed to whip you into shape. Bring a mat and water. Classes are held at Pioneer Pavilion Jan. 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 6-7 p.m. Call REC to register; the fee is $10 per session.
Do Pilates in the park
Increase your understanding of various Pilate’s concepts and movements with instructor Angela Lubonovich Jan. 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Classes held at Pioneer Pavilion. Bring a mat and water. Call REC to register; the fee is $32 all four sessions or $10 per session.
Yoga at Fellows Riverside Gardens
Join Marina Perdos in the mornings (9:30-11 a.m.) and Karres Cvetkovich in the evenings (5:30-7 p.m.) for a blend of energizing yoga styles that will help you keep a healthy outlook Tuesdays and Thursdays in January. T’ai Chi Step One in the Gardens
Ease stress, improve health, and increase vitality Wednesdays in January from noon until 1 p.m. Join Marie Lew in warm-ups, breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information. There is a $10 fee per class.
Workout boot camp is Jan. 12
Kick start your workout with a jam-packed hour of head-to-toe fitness on Jan. 12 from 10-11 a.m. This functional boot camp will consist of drills that benefit the beginner exerciser to the advanced athlete. The class is instructed by JoAnne Maloney and will take place at Yellow Creek Lodge. Call REC to register; the fee is $10.
Yoga basics on Sundays
Feel comfortable in a class for everyone Sundays from Jan. 20-March 10 from 9-10:30 a.m. while you learn the basics taught by Karres Cvetkovich. The fee is $80 for eight weeks or $75 if registered by Jan. 12. Gift Certificates are available. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.
Resolution and roundtable
If your New Year’s resolution is to get more exercise, join Mill Creek Park’s first walk of the new year on Jan. 6 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Afterward, sit down with Bill Whitehouse for a potpourri discussion about nature- and park-related topics from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Attend one or both. Meet at Birch Hill Cabin. This hike has a moderate rating and is 2 miles long.
Winter farmscape set at Mill Creek Park
Hike at Mill Creek Park and explore what winter has brought to the diverse habitats along the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroParks Farm on Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. This hike has a moderate rating for unpaved trails and is 2 miles long.
See shades of winter at the gorge
Find out how many colors Mother Nature displays in the dead of winter as you search the Gorge area for matches to the shades in a big box of Crayolas. Meet at the Lanterman’s Mill parking lot on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. This hike has a moderate rating for possible icy trails and it will span 2 miles.
Learn about ice making
During the early 1900s, the Youngstown Ice Company harvested ice for commercial use from Mill Creek and the Mahoning River. Look back at the ice harvesting industry and then take a walk to see what remains of the Youngstown Ice Company’s heyday at Mill Creek Park Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Those interested can then continue with a hike around Lake Glacier. Meet at the Davis Center. This hike is a moderate rating with hills and steps and will span 1/4 or 3 miles.
Health and wellness walks in Mill Creek
Meet at the Mill Creek golf course overflow parking lot on Jan. 9 or the MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead on Jan. 23 at 9 a.m. to hike for the health of it and experience the many benefits of walking. The Jan. 9 hike has an easy rating and will be 1 or 3 miles and the Jan. 23 hike has a moderate rating and will be 2 or 4 miles.
Loose Knit Group meets in January
All hands helping to “Warm Up America,” are welcome at the Loose Knit Group Jan. 4 and 18 from 10 a.m. until noon, both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for more information.
Do yoga with MetroMutts dogs
Mill Creek Park will be hosting yoga with your dog Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. All levels are welcome, including those who have never practiced yoga. Dress comfortably, bring a mat and water for yourself and treats for your dog. Class will be conducted by Maureen Lauer-Gatta, owner of The Yoga Room in Warren, Ohio. Classes will be at Pioneer Pavilion. The cost for MetroMutts members is $5 and $10 for non-members.
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley
Ford Nature Center’s staff will tell you all about nonsense nature on Jan. 22. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. with the program at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Meet at MetroParks Farm.
Potting paperwhites
Children ages 3 – 5 will learn about flower bulbs and plant pots of cheery paperwhites to take home Jan. 8 from 1-2 p.m. and Jan. 19 from 11 until noon. A snack and story will add to the fun. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The fee is $7 for residents and $9 for non-residents.

Two-year-olds are invited to bundle up and enjoy the sights and fun of winter at Mill Creek Park Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. Create a craft for the birds then take a short walk. Preregister at Ford Nature Center. The fee is $2 for residentas and $3 for non-residents.
Gone trackin’ for wild animals
This event is for children ages 3-5. Learn what wild animals are out and about during the winter at Mill Creek Park on Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. or Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. Investigate their tracks and other signs through a story, activities, and outdoor exploration. Dress for the weather and preregister at Ford Nature Center. The fee is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents.
Make good luck bean wreaths
It has been said that beans will bring good luck in the New Year. Children ages 6 and older can bring good fortune to their homes by making a colorful wreath of different kinds of dried beans at Mill Creek Park on Jan. 19 from 1:30-3 p.m. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The fee is $9 for residents and $12 for non-residents.
Get free pancakes on Feb. 5
IHOP is giving away free pancakes on Feb. 5 to celebrate National Pancake Day. The fundraiser aims to raise $3 million to kick off Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 30th anniversary. Visit any IHOP location to participate.
