POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Dec. 23

Criminal damaging: Fifty feet of lawn damage was reported in the 5100 block of Youngstown-Poland Road.

Recovered property: A man found $218 as well as a woman’s driver’s license and numerous credit cards in front of his Apache Lane home.

Dec. 24

Burglary: To a residence in the 6400 block of Diana Drive through the front door. A $700 laptop computer was taken.

BOARDMAN

Dec. 27

Theft: Police charged Jason R. Henninger, 34, of 81 Pineview Drive, Austintown, with stealing about $400 worth of men’s clothing from the J.C. Penney store in Southern Park Mall.

Theft: Authorities booked 48-year-old John W. Stricko, 201 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown, after he was accused of stealing a $400 vacuum cleaner from the J.C. Penney store.

Domestic violence: Police charged Cory D. Foster, 33, of 183 Clifton Drive, Boardman, with the crime after his wife alleged Foster had twice head-butted her during an argument.

Theft: A Columbiana woman reported her $800 iPhone stolen while in the 400 block of Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: An East Huntington Drive woman reported her $440 bicycle, a bike rack and a lock stolen.

Criminal damaging: Someone did $75 in damage to a garage window in the 70 block of Gertrude Avenue.

Theft: A briefcase, a laptop computer and other items were removed from a vehicle in the 1200 block of Boardman-Canfield Road.

Theft: Police at Girard Municipal Court took into custody 22-year-old Jachole L. Toney, who was wanted on a theft warrant. Toney, of 158 Hartford Ave., Youngstown, was accused of stealing a $60 pair of boots from Payless Shoesource, 48 Boardman-Poland Road.

Misuse of a credit card: A Meadowbrook Avenue woman noticed $733 worth of unauthorized transactions to her credit card that had been made at several township locations and at a business in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

Theft: A Poland woman reported the theft of her wallet while at a Windham Court restaurant.

Fraud: A Columbiana man reported being scammed of $1,930 after having cashed a check at a township credit union.

Theft: A charge was pending against a woman after three articles of clothing were stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Counterfeit: A fake $20 bill was discovered at Giant Eagle, 476 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Assault: A woman told police her son, of Santa Fe Drive, had been struck in the face after seeing he had a black eye and a 4-inch scratch to his cheek.

Misuse of a credit card: A Youngstown man found out his lost bank card had been used without permission at several Boardman locations.

Assault: A Mayflower Drive man reported another man at the Southern Park Mall shoved him when he asked the man to return a key to the accuser’s home.

Theft: John R. Hovanec, 30, of 490 Tenney Ave., Campbell, who was wanted on two warrants, also faced a theft charge after five packages of T-shirts were taken from Dollar General, 271 Boardman-Canfield Road. Also arrested was 29-year-old Michael A. Carosella of 1809 Ridgelawn Ave., Austintown, who was wanted on a probation-violation charge and one count of breaking and entering, both felonies.

Dec. 28

Weapon: A traffic stop on Market Street led to the arrests of Dontrel J. Woods, 23, of Cincinnati on misdemeanor charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and obstructing official business, as well as Jawonn O. Hymes, 21, of 22 Terrace Drive, Boardman, who also faced a charge of obstructing official business. Woods failed to disclose to police a loaded 9-mm handgun under the driver’s seat and provided false information about Hymes, who also lied about his identity, authorities said.

Burglary: Took place in the 1800 block of Oles Avenue, where a $653 snow blower was taken from a garage.

Aggravated menacing: An East Midlothian Boulevard man alleged his girlfriend’s parents threatened to have someone harm him, and to kill the accuser.

Theft: A surveillance camera showed a man and a woman removing merchandise from display areas at Dollar General, 271 Boardman-Canfield Road, then obtaining a refund for the items.

Drugs: Youngstown police arrested 18-year-old Jabriael D. Jones, 323 Carroll St., Youngstown, who was wanted by township authorities on two counts of theft and one each of possession of drugs and dangerous drugs, a felony and a misdemeanor, respectively.

Domestic violence: Police charged Elizabeth R. Vanantwerp, 19, of 7023 Paxton Road, Boardman, with the crime after her boyfriend’s brother alleged Vanantwerp had deliberately run over his foot with her vehicle as he tried to stop her from leaving with two children. The victim, who was not seriously injured, apparently felt she was under the influence of a narcotic, a report said.

Theft: Two Akron girls, 14 and 15, and a Warren girl, 14, were charged, accused of stealing $371 worth of merchandise from J.C. Penney.

Dec. 29

Harassment: An Applecrest Drive woman reported having received numerous annoying text messages and calls.

Theft: Monica L. Jones of 2335 Buckeye Circle, Youngstown, was charged. The 18-year-old Jones was accused of stealing six articles of clothing from Kmart, 1209 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft/assault: An Erskine Avenue woman reported a man shoved her, causing the accuser to hit her head on a microwave oven, then pushed her backward on her porch. The man also stole $17 and a pack of cigarettes, she told officers.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle/theft: A Youngstown man accused a family member of taking a Cadillac Eldorado vehicle registered in the name of his late father, formerly of South Avenue. The accuser also reported two flat-screen TVs, a washer and dryer and an undetermined sum of money stolen from his residence.

Identity fraud: A Johnston Place man saw that four unauthorized charges to his account had been made in California. The loss came to $410.

Theft: A woman discovered a $500 laptop computer missing from her Glendale Avenue home.

Harassment: An employee with a Boardman-Poland Road gas station reported a caller pretended to be a real-estate agent and feigned interest in winning lottery numbers, all as part of a pattern of harassment.

Theft: A worker for a Southern Park Mall store noticed her $200 cellphone missing from the top of an employee locker.

Dec. 30

Arrest: Police in the 1400 block of East Midlothian Boulevard pulled over 37-year-old Heather A. McKenzie, 759 Tudor Lane, Boardman. She was wanted on a warrant from Hubbard accusing her of failure to appear in court.

Assault: An Allen Drive man told police two men jumped on, struck and choked the accuser while he was on a bed. The man had various cuts and scratches.

Counterfeit: Two phony $100 bills were passed at Giant Eagle, 1201 Doral Drive.

Theft/criminal damaging: Someone in the 7000 block of West Boulevard broke into numerous storage lockers, damaging their door hinges, and removed an unknown quantity of items.

Vandalism: A portion of siding to a residence in the 100 block of Clifton Drive was spray-painted.

Assault: A man in his vehicle preparing to leave a township movie theater told authorities another patron punched his face and throat after accusing the victim of having tossed something in his hair while in the theater.
