Feisty: Little love is lost between the Phantoms and Steel who combined for 62 minutes in penalty in the Phantoms’ 4-0 win on Wednesday. The Phantoms had the only power-play goal when Austin Cangelosi earned his second hat trick of the season with his third goal in the third period. John Padulo and Sam Anas assisted. “We have to be more disciplined with penalties, be smarter,” said Cangelosi after the Phantoms skated off seven Steel power-play chances.
Hungry goalie: After stopping 24 shots for his fifth shutout of the season, Phantoms goaltender admitted he was starving. “our first alarm went off at 6:30, but I got out of bed at 7,” said Romeo for his team’s first 10 a.m. game. “I didn’t have a big breakfast so I think we’re going out for a big lunch.” Romeo said the team got a lift from Cangelosi’s return from a four-game suspension for checking from behind in the Feb. 10 game in Indianapolis. “Having him back in the lineup definitely did not hurt us tonight,” Romeo said. Cangelosi leads the team with 43 points.
Speaking of suspensions: Phantoms head coach Anthony Noreen said players making gestures in poor taste during a game are subject to suspension. During the third period, Steel forward Danny Fetzer was one of two Chicago players shown on the Covelli Centre Kiss Cam and gave a one-finger salute. Romeo said he feels the Phantoms know better. “Anthony instills a lot of discipline in us — if we didn’t get suspended by the league, he would have a punishment for us if we did something like that.” Several Phantoms were asked after the game if they knew they could be suspended for such an infraction. Half said yes. “He should be suspended,” forward John Padulo said. “Its uncalled for, especially at the kids game.”
